Florida Bill to Restrict Employer-Owned Life Insurance – Update
As covered in a previous LRA Update, a Florida Assembly member had introduced legislation intended to place restrictions on employer-owned life insurance. The restrictions would include requiring an employer to provide written notice of a policy to the insured’s spouse and/or estate within 30 days of issuance, a limit of no more than 5 policies at one time without prior approval from the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, and a requirement to either cancel or transfer ownership of the policy upon termination of the insured’s employment.
In December, a substantially similar bill was also introduced in the Florida Senate by Senator Jonathan Martin (R). While both versions of the bill have been referred to committee, industry opinion is that the legislation is unlikely to gain significant consideration.
